Email Netiquette

I know this is old hat for some of you, but many people still send out bulk email to friend and family and unknowingly open they up to spamming.

Today's Tracy's Tip is about sending bulk email from your email client.

When sending email to multiple recipients, it is proper internet etiquette (netiquette) to hide the email addresses. You do this by putting all the addresses in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy field). You find it under CC when composing an email. If you are using Outlook, and it is not there, look for the options button, click the arrow near it and choose BCC. Then put your email address in the To field. This way you are not sharing peoples email addresses with people they might now know. Some people don’t like that, because of SPAM and all.

Here are a couple of sites on the topic:

Google It ~ All of it!

If I have a question about anything from a corned beef and cabbage recipe for my crockpot to the abscure error message that I just got on my computer, I google it. I know a lot of people who google it, too. But there is a vast sea of people who have not yet learned that google (or your favorite search engine) has the answers to almost anything. Or at least has the list of sites that have the answers.

Especially when it comes to computer questions. Before you bother your resident geek, or geek friend, or geek cousin, or co-worker or even your favorite web host, please, I say again, please, Google it. You will learn so much, I promise you.

Don't give up on the first search, change your search terms a bit, use part of a phrase. If you computer says, "Internet explorer has encountered a problem in file jkl;jk;j;j.htm and must close" Try googling: "explorer must close." Use general rather than specific terms.

If you get frustrated go ahead and call your geek assistant, but at least you can tell them you tried to find it yourself with google. They will thank you for it.
